Sept. 22 to Oct. 16
English Language Arts:
We begin the year with an Identity unit where students explore the question, ‘Who Am I as a Person and a Learner?’ In this ‘All About Me’ unit, students will begin the year by telling their own story. In our first assignment, students will respond to A Raven Tale by Richard Wagamese and The Power of Passion and Perseverance TedTalk by Angela Ducksworth. Next, we will explore the power of descriptive writing in the ‘Where I’m From’ poem.

Math:
Students completed some preliminary math assessments and then started work on our first unit of the year, Decimals! We will review some basic operations with decimals and will learn about rounding/place value. Next, the class will work on converting decimals to fractions, percent and ratios with a “My 24” personal pie graph. I will keep you informed if there is a quiz or test coming soon. We will also start with number talks and will start some group problem solving. Your children have Math booklets and I encourage them to practice at home as some are rusty from summer vacation.
Science!:
Week of Sept. 28:
We start to develop our understanding of the scientific method with a bouncing a ball lab (Newton’s Third Law of Motion) and then onto a Measuring Matter Lab where students use the density formula in a real life application.
Soon we dive into our exciting Chemistry Unit! Yippee!!! Students will develop their understanding of MATTER. Please read chapter 4 in BC Science 7 and complete your Chapter 4 Glossary the 21 Key Terms on Page 121 in the Science textbook: include, Key Word, Definition and at least 2 real life examples. You will be permitted to use it on an upcoming quiz.
