Multiple Intelligences Test (M.I.T.) & Expert Group Project!

Students will continue to explore themselves including some “future gazing” as to how the might see themselves in their twenties.

This unit is all about discovering your strengths through Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. You’ll:

Take a multiple intelligences test
Graph your results
Reflect on what they mean for you
Work with a group to teach the class about one of the intelligences

The big question we’ll keep coming back to is: Who am I?

Core competencies focus on building relationships during group work.

Multiple Intelligences

Traditional classrooms and assessment methods are often biased in favour of those with strong linguistic or mathematical abilities, which has posed problems for many students in today’s increasingly diverse classrooms.

This cartoon exemplifies the traditional classroom perfectly. Teaching and assessing everyone in the same way often only benefits those who learn best that way, and ignores the strengths of everyone else.

Focusing on Multiple Intelligences we can strive to meet the needs of all learners by providing an opportunity for students to learn and demonstrate their learning in ways suited to their learning needs and styles. This is not to say that traditional learning should not take place as there is still much to be gained by using it as one of many tools in our teaching/learning toolbox. It means that each student should feel proud of their own uniqueness, celebrate their intelligences and when possible provide opportunities to show their understanding in ways that reflect their strengths.

I often remind students that because they have strong linguistic abilities it does not mean that they can use that as an excuse not to excel at math, art, p.e, etc, but rather it means they may have to work harder in these other areas (see Multiple Intelligences: Types of Activities).
