Journal Write #1: Naming

Watch the short video and answer the following questions.

1.  Define the following: Indigenous, First Nations, Metis, Inuit and Aboriginal.
2. Why do you think many Indigenous people prefer not to use the term ‘Aboriginal?’ Think of 7 words that start with ‘ab’ as a clue.

Once questions are answered, consider Ossie’s “How to Talk About Indigenous People.” Journal Response:  Do his explanations line up with your understanding of the word?  Why is it important that we consider the opinions/ preferences of the people named when naming?​​

Tuesday: Independent Novel Dive In!

Wednesday and Thursday: We are beginning the course with a viewing of the series First Contact​​ to explore the perspectives of some Canadians about Indigenous Peoples and to understand the unique characteristics of different First Peoples across the country.
