Mathematics is about more than getting the right answer. This year, you will work toward becoming a confident and flexible mathematical thinker who can solve problems, explain ideas, make connections and choose strategies that make sense.
Thinking and Problem Solving
You will learn through problems, investigations, games, challenges and real-world situations. We will explore different ways to solve the same problem and learn from one another’s strategies.
Being a strong mathematician does not mean calculating everything quickly. It means being willing to:
- think carefully
- notice patterns and make connections
- try different approaches
- explain why your strategy makes sense
- keep going when a problem is challenging
You will often work with classmates and use whiteboards, manipulatives, diagrams and models to show your thinking.
Numbers, Patterns and Algebra
You will continue developing your number sense and calculation skills while investigating relationships between numbers. Our learning will include:
- factors, multiples and divisibility
- integers
- order of operations
- patterns and relationships
- variables, expressions and equations
Our goal is not only to memorize steps. You will also learn why mathematical strategies work and when to use them.
Fractions, Decimals and Percents
You will strengthen your understanding of fractions, decimals and percents and explore how they are connected. We will use models, visuals, estimation, calculations and real-world examples to make these ideas meaningful.
Shape, Space and Measurement
Through hands-on activities and investigations, you will explore:
- angles
- area, perimeter and volume
- shapes and geometric relationships
- transformations
- coordinate grids
- measurement and spatial reasoning
Some of this learning may also connect with coding, building and design challenges.
Data and Probability
You will learn how to collect, organize, represent and interpret data. You will also investigate probability through experiments, games and real-world situations.
Most importantly, you will learn to question what data shows and decide whether the conclusions being made are reasonable.
Financial Literacy
You will apply mathematics to everyday financial decisions. Our learning may include:
- different ways to pay
- budgeting
- taxes and tips
- discounts
- interest and fees
- making informed financial choices
Building Your Skills and Confidence
Everyone enters the year with different mathematical strengths and areas for growth. Some learning will begin with a shared problem for the entire class, while the support, complexity and expectations will be adjusted for Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners.
Important skills will be revisited throughout the year so that your understanding continues to grow.
Our Goal
By the end of the year, we want you to see yourself as a capable mathematician. You will be encouraged to take risks, learn from mistakes, communicate your thinking and persevere when a solution is not immediately clear.
Our plans may change during the year as we respond to your learning, readiness, questions and new opportunities.
